How big is the issue and is it growing?
Unfortunately it’s both prevalent and pervasive. Furthermore, it’s growing and predicted to increase and is not just impacting large-scale health organisations or educational institutions – it is impacting SMEs on a daily basis in ways that can cripple a business. Every business leader should be considering how long their business could sustain being out of the market if their systems were compromised?
The Irish Context
Research by the Institute of Directors (IOD) in Q4 2022 tells us that 41% of respondent organisations have experienced a cyber attack. Of those who responded ‘yes’, they then asked when this attack took place. 25% of respondents say the breach occurred in the last six months. Furthermore, 21% reveal it was in the last year, 32% say it was in the last two years, while 13% say it was in the last three years.
In these challenging times, business preparation, disaster planning and continuity are key. IOD research finds that 70% of respondents note that they are extremely or very concerned about the potential impact of cyber security threats to the business continuity of their primary organisation. Another 29% say it is of some concern. Just 1% of respondents are ‘not concerned at all’.
