ComReg have issued a decision on measures to improve the Non Geographical Numbers (NGN) platform. These measures are being introduced to address the costs of calling NGNs and tackle confusion among callers about the differences between the NGNs.
Standardised tariffs
- From 1 December 2019 calls to 1850, 1890, 0818, or 076 NGNs will cost no more than calling a landline number and will be included in bundles that include landline calls.
- Calls to 1800 numbers from both landlines and mobiles will remain free. The cost of 1800 calls are paid by the receiver.
- Calls to 0818 will cost the caller no more than a call to a landline number. The cost of 0818 calls are paid by the caller.
NGN Consolidation
From 1 January 2022, the number of NGN ranges will be reduced from five (1800, 1850, 1890, 0818, and 076) to two (1800 and 0818). 1850, 1890, and 076 NGNs will be withdrawn and only 1800 Freephone and 0818 Standard Rate NGNs will remain in use. Unfortunately, there are no guidelines in place to say that you have the automatic rights to your 1890, 1850, 076 number to carry across to the 0818 or 1800 equivalent. You must act now to secure your 0818 or 1800 numbers now before someone else does.
