End of Life Support Plan for Windows 7
After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support, this is known as EoL (End of Life) for the following products :
- Windows 7 OS
- Server 2008 /2008R2
- Server SBS 2011 (Small Business Server)
- Office 2010.

EoL means Microsoft will be no longer be issuing service patches, security fixes or supporting third party software providers using their Windows 7 OS (Operating System) after this date. Any devices (Laptops & PC’s) running any Windows 7 version will become more vulnerable to security risks. As time goes on they will experience compatibility issues with newer versions of software and hardware.
Step 1 for End of Life: Start
To install or upgrade the operating system to Windows 10, you will require an enterprise license and installation. Are the devices running Windows 7 OS older than three years? Radius recommends replacing these devices as soon as possible. We can provide you with some options here. If your server is also reaching EoL, you can utilise Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Technology, and:
- Create an On-Premise Remote Desktop environment utilising Thin Clients instead of PC’s, removing the need to worry about End of Life issues in the future, and have a much lower cost of replacement and running that with traditional PC’s.
- Alternatively, you can move all of your environment to a Private Cloud infrastructure, again using Thin Clients instead of PC’s, but taking full advantage of the security, data protection, Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity that a Private Cloud environment offers.
- If none of the above fits your plans, then replace your old Windows 7 PC or laptop with a new device running Windows 10 professional.
If you do nothing (not recommended), your Windows 7 OS will not stop working. Microsoft will not issue or support future AV updates, security, software patches and updates. Your entire network may be vulnerable after January 2020.
